Bruneau Sand Dune: The Tallest Sand Dune In North America

Over the summer, I discovered that the tallest sand dune in North America was 45 minutes from my home town. Naturally, I was curious.

So I talked Tony into joining on a spontaneous hike to explore the 470 foot high dune.

Be sure to bring a ton of water if you decide to go play during the summer. This place gets freakin’ hot! You will get sand in your shoes unless you wear boots or those sleeves that go over your shoes (can’t quite think of the name right now!).

Heart Sand Dune

Someone had made an adorable heart out of rocks. I always love when people do that. Such a cute touch.

And then we began hiking up the sand dune. Thankfully, the clouds rolled in a bit. There is a cute little lake in between two of the dunes, but there are a ton of mosquitos…so bring your bug spray!

The dune furtherest away is the tallest. It took us forever to get to the top because the sand is so soft and it was scorching hot.

But we made it!

The cool thing about this park, is if you plan it correctly, you can stay and play during the day and stargaze at night. It’s far enough from city lights that the stars are gorgeous. The visitors center will rent you a sled or even a board so you can play on the sand. They even provide the wax for the sled/boards.

If you get the chance to come and hike the tallest sand dune in North America, I highly recommend it. But do some planning to make the most out of that trip and maybe even camp one night.
